Galveston: What Disney Cruise Families Actually Need to Know

Getting to the Port of Galveston

There’s no walking to this port, and unlike some other DCL ports, there’s no train option at all. The nearest Amtrak station is in downtown Houston, about 50 miles away, and it’s only served three times a week — not something you can actually plan a cruise around. For almost everyone, you’re flying in and either driving yourself, taking a rideshare, or booking Disney’s transfer.

Houston has two airports, and this is where people get tripped up. George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is about 72 miles from the port — 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic. William P. Hobby (HOU) is closer, at about 42 miles. Here’s the catch: Disney does not offer transportation from Hobby. If you fly into Hobby because it’s closer, you’re arranging your own ride the rest of the way.

Disney’s Official Transfer (and What Actually Happens)

For 2026 sailings, Disney sells a ground transfer between IAH and the Port of Galveston for $45 per guest, embarkation and debarkation days only. Transportation starts at 9:15 AM — if you land before that, you’re waiting at the airport with your luggage until it starts. Disney recommends booking this in advance, since only a limited number of transfers are available for purchase on the day.

Here’s how it actually works: you land, go straight to baggage claim, and a Disney Cruise Line rep is standing outside directing people to their transportation — a motorcoach, minibus, or taxi, depending on when you arrive and how big your group is.

The boarding-time myth. There’s a persistent idea that taking Disney’s transfer gets you on the ship faster. That wasn’t our experience in Galveston. We took Disney transportation and arrived early to the airport, and we still didn’t get to the port until after 12:30 PM. Your Castaway Club status does affect the port arrival time you can select in the Navigator app- that part’s real, and it works the same in Galveston as anywhere else. But the shuttle itself isn’t run by status. Early airport arrival plus Disney transportation doesn’t add up to early boarding.

The waiting area is right at baggage claim, and it gets incredibly crowded.

Flight Timing, If You’re Booking Your Own Air

• Disney says latest recommended arrival at IAH on embarkation day: 11:30 AM, but I always recommend flying in a day early.
• Earliest recommended departure from IAH on debarkation day: 1:30 PM

What you need to know: IAH sits on the north side of Houston. The Port of Galveston is on the south side, past the entire city. Your transfer route runs straight through Houston, and Houston rush hour is real. Per TomTom's Traffic Index for Houston morning rush hour runs roughly 7 to 10 AM, and the afternoon surge can start as early as 3 PM and run past 7 PM. Houston also ranked among the most congested cities in the country in INRIX's Global Traffic Scorecard.

This can impact both embarkation & debarkation:

- Arriving for embarkation: a morning flight into IAH can land you right in the middle of rush hour before you've even started the drive south.

- Leaving after debarkation: if your flight home is anytime from mid-afternoon into evening, you could be driving north through Houston during rush hour with a flight to catch.

Build in real buffer time on both ends, Houston TranStar's live and historical travel-time data is worth checking the morning of if you want an actual read on conditions rather than guessing.

Most importantly: This is why the shuttle to the cruise terminal is unpredictable and less likely to get you that Disney onboarding early magic we’ve come to expect with the Disney transfer.

Where to Stay the Night Before

If you want the Disney transfer to take you directly to the port, you'll need to stay in Houston near IAH. Disney partners with 4 hotels total: one in Houston, three on Galveston Island, but "partner" means different things depending on which one:

Houston Airport Marriott - literally inside IAH, between Terminals B and C. If you book a pre-cruise stay there, you can get to the location of the Disney Port Transfer is via the airport complimentary underground tram one level below baggage claim. It genuinely feels more like a mall train than an airport tram, but it gets you where you need to go. It's the easiest, most stress-free version of the night before because you're not driving anywhere, and you're not trusting a hotel shuttle you've never used. One catch: the shuttle to the port is still $45 per person each way, same as the general IAH transfer- staying at the hotel doesn't make it free. However, babies and toddlers ride free until age 3. While the night before is easy, waiting in baggage claim for over an hour standing room only with tiny humans is not nearly as easy.

San Luis Resort, Spa & Conference Center - about 3 miles from the port, on Galveston Island. Their shuttle to the port is run by the hotel, not Disney and is $15 per person, arranged at check-in.

Hilton Galveston Island Resort — also on the island, also runs its own independent shuttle, not affiliated with Disney Cruise Line - $15 per person, arranged at check-in.

The Tremont House — the newest Disney hotel partnership, just announced, but it doesn't start until 2027, so there's very little detail from Disney yet. On its own, though, the hotel already runs a cruise shuttle you can arrange at check-in for $15 per person.

Worth noticing: all three Galveston-based hotels charge the same $15 per person for their own shuttle, independent of anything Disney coordinates. The Marriott is the only one where Disney runs the transportation directly.

You Should Add a Day Before

Because flights are often unpredictable and IAH is so far from the port, it’s wise to just arrive the day before or rather than trying to fly in and sail same day. If you've got the extra day, and plan on making the trek from Houston to Galveston the day before, Galveston has some things to do like Pleasure Pier, Moody Gardens, and the beach!

The Port Itself

Let’s manage expectations here Galveston is a working port, more industrial than the ports you might be picturing. You can't walk into town from the terminal the way you can in Vancouver, San Diego, or Barcelona. You’ve been warned.

On parking: the Port of Galveston runs the only official parking operation affiliated with Disney (and Carnival, Princess, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean). Official economy lot rates run around $127 for a 5-day cruise and $178 for a 7-day cruise, with pricier garage and express options above that.

You're not locked into official parking, though because there’s close to a dozen independent lots that compete for business right near the port, and most run their own free or discounted shuttle to the terminal. Independent rates for a 7-day cruise generally run cheaper than the official lots. It’s worth comparing before you book, the savings might make a difference, and the shuttle makes it just as easy as parking with the port directly.

The Itineraries

As of writing this in July 2026, the Disney Magic is the only ship sailing from Galveston. Destinations include Progreso and Cozumel, four sailings to Nassau and Castaway Cay, and one transatlantic crossing. Sailings run 4, 5, and 7 nights, and they do include Marvel Day at Sea.

My honest take after visiting these ports multiple times with littles: if you have little kids, the ship is really the destination. The ports here aren't the draw the way a Caribbean itinerary out of Port Canaveral might be, and these itineraries are filled with sea days (which is nothing to complain about.) Really, you're not picking Galveston for the stops because the stops are few. You're picking it because it's the closest Disney ship to Texas. If that’s true- you might just be driving to the port and find most of this information useless.
